CHARACTER INFO:

God: Atlas Telamon

Domains of Power (in ancient times): Strength, endurance, astronomy

Current State of Power: Atlas' name is universally known, being
splashed across the front of almost every book of maps in existence.
Also, his image is a popular subject for art, especially sculpture,
whether supporting (erroneously) the Earth or the celestial sphere.
He remains a symbol of enduring strength in the minds of humanity, and
his image is still closely associated with both earth and heaven.
Take that, Epimetheus.

Mortal Name/Alias: Natal Maltose

Mortal Age: approximately 31

Appearance: (physical description, how they dress, etc) Atlas' mortal
glamour is only on the tall side of average (6'1"-ish), but he is
densely and hugely muscular. It is almost as if his tall frame was
compacted by the great weight he bore so long. There may be some
truth to this, as Natal weighs about 3 times as much as a human of the
same build. Natal maintains a very no frills appearance. His hair is
kept short and he wears a minimum of clothing, usually just shorts and
a tank top/t-shirt. The shirt is often neglected, as are shoes. If
not for his excellent physical condition, he would easily be mistaken
as homeless (though, in truth, he is). Instead, he is usually seen as
yet another musclebound beach bum enjoying the beautiful Miami
coastline.

If his glamour should fall, however, Atlas stands revealed at a height
of 15 feet. Though still hugely muscled, his frame is much longer,
making him appear every bit the giant he is. Unfortunetaly, should he
be wearing a shirt, it is quickly destroyed. In his natural form,
Atlas' skin still retains much of its rocky color and texture.
Medusa's curse, it holds him still.

Past History: (where are they from? How did they get to Miami and what

do they plan on doing there? If they're a god, what have they done

since leaving Olympus? Please be detailed.)

Atlas' life didn't change much with the fall of the Olympians. He had
been long since turned to stone by Athena (not Perseus, as is often
reported) and her Medusa-faced shield. After he so nearly escaped his
punishment during the labors of Herakles, Athena decided to be
"merciful" and forever solve the problem of the leader of the
Titanomachy at the same time. And so, mighty Atlas became one with
the mountain that had been his home for so long.

Though his body was petrified, Atlas' mind was unhindered. But
instead of being driven to madness, Atlas found peace. Now that
carrying his eternal burden was effortless, Atlas found that his gaze
was no longer forced to the ground under the load. He turned his gaze
for the first time to the heavens he bore. He became intimately
familiar with the constellations and was especially fond of the one
that represented his daughters, the Pleiades. His anger at his
punishment and the crippling of his brother faded. As the eons
passed, Atlas' consciousness expanded, and he became as one with
nature, foregoing his individual consciousness.

But while Atlas pursued enlightenment, the world changed around him.
The Olympians fell, and the fundaments of the cosmos shifted to suit
their new master. No longer were the earth and the heavens two gods
to be kept apart. They no longer exerted tremendous pressure on
stalwart Atlas. Without their support, however, Atlas found his perch
ever more precarious, with himself unable to do anything about it. No
longer capable of understanding what was happening to him, Atlas
tumbled from his perch on M'Goun mountain and into the rivers of
Morocco.

Th rivers drew him inexorably toward the Atlantic Ocean. After
uncounted years, Atlas finally plunged into its black depths.
However, the dark waters, full of bioluminescent fish, reminded him of
the sky he had admired for so long. After the turbulence of his own
personal fall, a measure of equilibrium was returned to his existence.
Though, somewhere deep in the recesses of his mind, he was saddened
that he could no longer view his daughters dance across the sky.

Atlas' equilibrium was to be shortlived. In front of Atlas' eyes a
figure bathed in light appeared. "I come bearing the word of the
Lord," pronounced the figure. "You shall now learn the rules of your
new existence. Rules inviolable on pain of death." Receiving no
response to his rather impressive speech, the figure looked more
closely at Atlas. "Oh, my poor creature. You no longer possess the
capability to understand me. " The figure paused for a moment, as if
in thought. "My message must get through, so I will make you
understand." The figure reached out his hand and touched Atlas gently
on the face.

In an instant, Atlas' mind imploded. The experience was, in a word,
traumatic. "That's better," said the figure, "Do you understand."
Atlas could not explain how, but he did understand. But the
understanding was out of context. He could do nothing with it.
However, it was beyond him to explain this to the figure. He simply
nodded, the first voluntary movement Atlas had undertaken in ages.
The figure seemed pleased, however. "That is well," the figure smiled
beneficently, "Peace be with you." And with that, the figure
disappeared, leaving Atlas, feeling small and confused, at the bottom
of the ocean.

Atlas had little time to ponder the implications of his new state of
mind. Perhaps because of the actions of his strange visitor, or
perhaps due to simple entropy, Medusa's curse was wearing off. Atlas
could once again feel the crushing pressures of the deep ocean.
Tormented by the newly resurfaced memories of his imprisonment beneath
the implacable vault of the heavens, Atlas began walking the floor of
the ocean, hoping to escape its incessant crush. And wouldn't you
know it, the beaches of Miami are where he will finally make landfall.

Personality: Atlas is very much a confused man. He is still trying to
make sense of his new existence. He is quiet and introverted. He is
always busy, and is capable of great focus in pursuing his inscrutable
goals. During the brief times that he is still, he is often gazing up
at the sky, as if searching for himself there. The "real" Atlas is
buried somewhere within, but time will tell if he manages to find the
surface.

Personal Likes and Dislikes:

Likes: Being strong, lifting things, dropping things, achieving
balance, stargazing

Dislikes: Being trapped, pressure, being interrupted, nosy angels.

Special Notes: (any comments or explanations go here)

Re: Atlas' brother is Menoetius. He is also the brother of Epimetheus
and Prometheus, but he has disowned them.

Re: the figure shrouded in light. This is the Archangel Raphael,
agent of God's divine healing. He was given the task of making sure
Atlas understood the Fall. He gives Atlas back his individuality,
which was rather more a curse than a blessing, as Atlas had achieved a
kind of enlightenment. Raphael was blind to this, as his only goal
was to deliver his message. His interference also breaks Medusa's
curse on Atlas, but did not remove it, so it is very slowly wearing
off.

Re: Athena's Medusa shield. I couldn't really find a citation for
this, but I know I read it somewhere. There is mention of Athena
having a Medusa faced breastplate, though, in theoi's entry on
Perseus. http://www.theoi.com/Heros/Perseus.html#Gorgo
